Holloway (28-8) dominated the fight, landing 201 total strikes to Poirier’s 109 and connecting on 53% of his significant shots. He knocked Poirier down twice in the opening rounds and controlled much of the fight’s tempo.
Poirier, fighting in front of a hometown crowd in what would be his retirement bout, had a brief moment of hope at the end of Round 2 with a chokehold and ground strikes, but Holloway withstood the pressure.
"I knew I was going to be the villain," Holloway said. "I came in to spoil the party, and I did."
Poirier (30-10), a former interim UFC Lightweight Champion, leaves behind a storied career with wins over Conor McGregor (twice), Justin Gaethje, and Michael Chandler.
"I thought it was a lot closer," Poirier reflected. "I tried to fight smart," Poirier said.
In the co-main event, Paulo Costa (15-4) snapped a three-fight skid with a unanimous decision win over Roman Kopylov. Daniel Rodriguez scored a major upset in the welterweight division (+425 odds), defeating Kevin Holland.
Patricio Freire (37-8) dominated Dan Ige in a featherweight bout, while Michael Johnson (25-19) upset Daniel Zellhuber in the main card opener.
