CNN anchor Abby Phillip recently warned Vice President Kamala Harris about the upcoming debate with former President Donald Trump. Phillip emphasized that Harris might face a challenging situation, as Trump is known for being very persistent and forceful.

Phillip’s warning to Harris

As per the reports of Yahoo news, Phillip expressed concern over Harris’ strategy of ignoring Trump’s criticisms during a CNN interview. She pointed out that Trump’s assertive and persistent nature might make it difficult for Harris to remain unresponsive on stage. Phillip noted that Trump’s loud presence could force Harris to engage with his attacks, despite her previous choice to disregard them.

Trump’s previous comments on Harris

During a July event with the National Association of Black Journalists, Trump made controversial remarks about Harris’s racial identity. He questioned whether Harris was Black or Indian, which sparked a response from Harris. When asked about Trump’s comments in an interview with Dana Bash, Harris chose to dismiss them, calling them part of a “same old tired playbook” and requesting to move on.

Panel opinions on Harris’s strategy

CNN’s political commentators were split on how Harris should handle Trump in the debate. Ashley Allison, a former National Coalitions Director for Biden-Harris 2020, suggested that Harris should ignore Trump’s remarks. Allison believed that by not engaging with Trump, Harris could appear dignified and let Trump come off as a bully. She highlighted that Harris’s response to Trump’s comments about race was important because it kept the focus on more relevant issues.

However, CNN analyst David Axelrod backed Harris's choice to ignore Trump's remarks during her interview. According to Axelrod, Trump's actions highlight a crucial query for voters: do they want a president who prioritizes their concerns or one who launches personal jabs? Axelrod believed that Harris's strategy in her CNN appearance was successful in refocusing the discussion on significant issues.
