The United States denied Chinese claims Thursday, March 23, that its military had driven away an American guided-missile destroyer from operating around disputed islands in the South China Sea, in an incident that comes as tensions in the region between the two powers continue to rise. The U.S. Navy's 7th Fleet said that a statement from China's Southern Theatre Command that it had forced the USS Milius away from waters around the Paracel Islands — called Xisha by China — was “false.”(Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Greg Johnson/U.S. Navy via AP)
China On Friday issued a warning of potential "serious consequences" in response to the United States Navy's sailing of a destroyer around the disputed Paracel Islands for the second consecutive day. China asserts that the move is a violation of their sovereignty and security, fueling ongoing tensions between the two countries in the South China Sea. The area has become a source of conflict as the US objects to China's increasingly aggressive stance in asserting ownership over the strategic waterway, which it claims as its own.

USS Milius Destroyer

The USS Milius (DDG-69) is a guided-missile destroyer of the United States Navy. It is named after Lieutenant Commander Paul L. Milius, a naval aviator who was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his heroic actions during the Vietnam War. Commissioned on 23 November 1996, the Milius is the 19th Arleigh Burke-class destroyer to join the fleet.

The Arleigh Burke-class is a class of destroyers that are designed for multi-mission roles, including anti-air, anti-submarine, and anti-surface warfare. The USS Milius, in particular, is equipped with an array of advanced sensors and weapons systems that make it one of the most lethal destroyers in the fleet. Its armament includes the Aegis combat system, which integrates the ship's radar, sonar, and weapons systems to provide unparalleled situational awareness and offensive capabilities.

Advance Equipments

The Milius operates from the 3rd Fleet Naval Base in San Diego, California. With a length of over 500 feet and a displacement of more than 9,000 tons, the ship is one of the most powerful and advanced guided-missile destroyers in the US Navy.

The USS Milius is also equipped with the Vertical Launch System (VLS), which can launch a variety of missiles, including the Tomahawk land-attack cruise missile, the Standard Missile-2 (SM-2), and the Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM). The VLS enables the Milius to engage targets at long ranges and in all weather conditions. In addition, the ship has two Mk 45 5-inch/54-caliber lightweight guns, which are capable of firing a variety of ammunition types, including high-explosive, illuminating, and smoke.

The Milius also has an advanced electronic warfare suite that enables it to detect and counter enemy electronic signals, including radar and communication signals. This system is crucial in modern naval warfare, where the use of electronic signals is pervasive and essential for communications, targeting, and situational awareness.

The USS Milius has a crew of approximately 300 sailors, who work tirelessly to maintain the ship's readiness and operational capabilities. The crew is highly trained and experienced, with many of its members having served in previous deployments and operations. The ship has a range of more than 4,400 nautical miles and can operate for extended periods of time without refueling, which makes it highly flexible and adaptable to a wide range of mission requirements.

Deployments

The Milius has been deployed to a number of areas around the world, including the Western Pacific, the Indian Ocean, and the Persian Gulf. It has participated in various operations and exercises in these regions, including ballistic missile defense, anti-piracy operations, and maritime security patrols. The Milius has also been involved in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, providing aid and support to communities affected by natural disasters.

In the early 2000s, the ship was deployed to the Persian Gulf as part of the global War on Terror. It played a key role in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, providing critical air defense and maritime security assistance.

More recently, the USS Milius has been deployed to the Western Pacific as part of the US Navy's ongoing effort to maintain a strong military presence in the region. The ship has conducted routine patrols, exercises, and training operations throughout the area, working closely with regional allies and partners to promote stability and security.

One of the most notable recent incidents involving the USS Milius occurred in the South China Sea in May of 2019. The ship was conducting a freedom of navigation operation in the area when it was confronted by Chinese military vessels. The Chinese vessels attempted to interfere with the Milius' operation, but the ship ultimately succeeded in carrying out its mission.

The USS Milius is an important asset of the United States Navy and a symbol of American military power and technological advancement. Its advanced capabilities and experienced crew make it a formidable force that is capable of operating in some of the most challenging environments and conditions. As the Navy continues to modernize and upgrade its fleet, the Milius will continue to play a critical role in ensuring the security and stability of the United States and its allies.
