U.S. jobless claims touches 166,000, lowest since 1968

There has been a decline in the claims for unemployment benefits to 166,000 last week, the lowest since 1968. This decline in US jobless claims shows a rise in demand for workers in the US market.

The US labor market shows strength despite the rising costs and the pandemic effects. It was unexpected when the US job market saw a decline in the US jobless claims last week. It has been at the lowest level since 1968. The average number of layoffs and dismissals has been lower than before the covid pandemic occurred.

The initial US jobless claims dropped to 166,000 for the week ended on April 2. The figure was below 200000, as had been estimated by Dow Jones. It was also 5,000 less than the total of the previous week. The department stated that it went through the claims between 2017 and 2021. It helped in modifying the factors it had been using to evaluate the numbers.

During the pandemic situation, the Labor Department began applying complementary seasonal adjustment factors.

It helped in handling the massive changes in the data with an abnormal spike in jobless claims, as was the case during the initial periods of lockdown in 2020.

The labor department said that the claims for unemployment benefits decreased from 187,000 by 28,000 for the week that ended on March 19, the lowest since September 1969.

Despite the fall in the claims for unemployment benefits, the results reflect that the US jobs market is going through worker scarcity. About 5 million more employment opportunities are there compared to the availability of the workers in the market. It is escalating wages and shooting up inflation.

Federal Reserve administrators are increasing the interest rates to tighten the huge demand amid the inconsistencies in the supply chains.

Despite the various hindrances to the economy, the recruitments are moving upwards.

There was little effect on the number of US jobs during the reemergence of the pandemic during winter.
