The US stock market had a tough day on Friday after a wave of bad economic news sent markets spiralling downward, as per reports.

The S&P 500 suffered its biggest drop since December 18 and slid to 1.7%, with the small-cap Russell 2000 following closely behind, reported Reuters. All three major indexes ended in the red, and the Dow had its steepest Friday-to-Friday drop since mid-October, it plunged by 748 points, or 1.6%. While the Nasdaq Composite index fell 2.2%, reported Quartz.

Consumer confidence takes a hit

According to Quartz, consumer confidence fell to its lowest level since November 2023. That’s a worrying sign for investors as long-term inflation expectations spiked to levels not seen since 1995. The services purchasing managers’ index slipped into contraction, and home sales in January dropped more than experts had predicted, as per the report.

Reuters reported that among the 11 major sectors of the S&P 500, all but consumer staples ended lower, with consumer discretionary and tech suffering the steepest percentage losses.

Rising uncertainty

It wasn’t just the numbers that made the day so tough, even sentiment across the market was shaken. As per Reuters, businesses are feeling increasingly uncertain about the future, and that fear has started to ripple through every corner of the economy. Walmart’s disappointing forecast on Thursday added fuel to those worries, painting a picture of struggling consumer demand.

Greg Bassuk, CEO at AXS Investments said, "We're seeing consumer sentiment, tariffs and corporate earnings having leap-frogged AI and technology as the primary drivers of market direction," as quoted by Reuters.

According to S&P Global chief economist Chris Williamson, US businesses' optimism has evaporated amid a darkening picture of heightened uncertainty, as per the report.

Big tech companies, like Nvidia, saw sharp drops, further stoking concerns about whether they can continue driving market growth. According to analysts, while many companies have reported better-than-expected earnings this quarter, that positive news hasn’t been enough to overcome the wider economic anxieties.

As the market closed for the week, the mood was anything but optimistic. For the Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq, Friday’s selloff wasn’t just a one-day drop—it capped off a week of anxiety and loss. Analysts predict that volatility could linger for longer.

Bassuk said "We're anticipating that the uncertainty and the volatility is going to remain at least through the end of this first quarter," as quoted by Reuters.

Analysts are now projecting a 15.7% year-on-year earnings growth for the S&P 500 in the fourth quarter, according to LSEG data.

FAQs:

Why did the US stock market drop on Friday?
Friday was a tough day for the US stock market because a bunch of negative economic news came out all at once. Consumer confidence dropped to its lowest level in months, inflation worries grew, and we saw signs of economic slowdowns like weaker home sales and a dip in services activity.

What happens if consumer confidence is low?
Low consumer confidence is an indication that people are uncertain about the economy. This would lead individuals to cut back on spending. But this would be a problem as consumer spending accounts for much of the economic growth of a nation.
