Tyre Nichols death: Footage released by police shows brutal torture

In the Tyre Nichols case, Memphis Police have released footage. After the footage was released, protests were being organized in at least nine cities across the US.

A bodycam and CCTV camera footage, which showed that Tyre Nichols was brutally beaten up by five Black police officers, has been released by Memphis Police. The father-of-one, who was calling for his mother during the incident, died after facing police brutality.

The footage

Four separate videos have been released by police. They have also been cut into an hour-long clip. It includes police bodycam footage and video from a CCTV camera.


In the bodycam footage, police can be seen beating the 29-year-old for three minutes. They also shouted profanities at him throughout the attack.

In the footage, Nichols can be heard screaming "mom, mom" many times as the beating continued. Nichols was just 80 yards (73 metres) away from his family home, as per his mother.

Three days after the arrest, Nichols died on January 10. Before the video footage was made public, Memphis Police chief Cerelyn Davis asked for calm.

"I expect you to feel what the Nichols family feels. I expect you to feel outrage in the disregard of basic human rights," she said.

Five Black officers get charged

The five Black officers, who have been charged, are Desmond Mills Jr, Demetrius Haley, Tadarrius Bean, Emmitt Martin III and Justin Smith.

For Nichols's death, the five sacked officers have been charged with second-degree murder and other crimes, like kidnapping, assault, official misconduct and official oppression.

Mills's lawyer, Blake Ballin, and Martin's lawyer, William Massey, said that their clients will plead not guilty.

Nichols's mother, RowVaughn Wells, earlier warned supporters of the "horrific" nature of the video. She also pleaded for peace, saying, "tearing up streets is not what my son stood for.”

US President Joe Biden has also said that he was outraged and deeply pained to see the horrific video of the beating resulting in Nichols's death.
