The box office premiere of Lee Isaac Chung's Twisters has surpassed expectations with a stunning performance. Despite uneven reviews in some areas, the movie has a solid cast and is doing well across the globe.

Twisters, directed by Lee Isaac Chung, opened to an astonishing $80.5 million domestically, surpassing initial box office projections. This amount exceeded the $74.6 million estimate from Saturday. The film, which is now playing in 4,151 theaters, shattered The Day After Tomorrow's 2004 record of $68.44 million for the largest American opening for a natural disaster film, as per the reports of The Hollywood Reporter.

The movie had the third biggest start of the year, trailing only Inside Out 2 ($154.2 million) and Dune: Part Two ($82.5 million). Overseas, Twisters earned $27.1 million from 76 markets, totaling $42.7 million internationally. This brings the global total to $132.2 million against a budget of $155 million. It performed well in Latin America, Australia, and the U.K., but underperformed in China with $1.5 million.

Twisters: Cast and ranking

Twisters had excellent performances by Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos in the lead parts. The movie is also a big triumph for filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung, who made the indie smash Minari. The movie was popular with both young and old adults, appealing to a broad spectrum of viewers. It did well with both genders. It was given an A- by Cinemascore and a 77% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, however 92% of viewers gave it a better rating.

The strong domestic performance helped alleviate tough comparisons with last year's Barbie and Oppenheimer openings. Meanwhile, Despicable Me 4 continued its success, earning over $500 million globally. Inside Out 2 remained strong, nearing the $600 million domestic mark and close to surpassing Frozen II’s global earnings. The horror film Longlegs performed well with $11.7 million in its second weekend, while Fly Me to the Moon saw a steep decline, earning $3.3 million domestically in its second week. A Quiet Place: Day One maintained its position in the top five.

Twisters is currently playing in theaters nationwide.
