TV character splits that we still can't move on from

TV dramas frequently feature a love story or two that viewers may follow, but sometimes tragedies occur that result in heartbreaking breakup plots.

Cristina and Burke, Grey's Anatomy
The episode starts on the day of Cristina and Burke's wedding and follows as a number of mishaps happen. But Burke ends the whole thing when Sandra Oh's iconic character hesitates for a second.


Rory and Jess, Gilmore Girls
Generations of fans of the popular TV show Gilmore Girls rewatch it every year. Over the course of the seven seasons of the show, we witness the titular sisters experience many highs and lows in their dating lives, including some heartbreaking breakups. However, Jess and Rory have always been the one that has struck me as the most tragic.

Kat and Ethan, Euphoria
Since actress Barbie Ferreira left the program and Euphoria became considerably less of a focus in its second season, many fans believe that Euphoria failed to deliver on her promise to Kat. She gaslighted Ethan and disregarded his feelings about their relationship, which made her breakup with him feel blatantly harsh.

Rachel and Ross, Friends
In Friends Season 3, Rachel and Ross have a significant falling out and ultimately decide to separate. However, they split up after Ross leaps into the bed of another woman. And after 10 seasons, it's still one of the most memorable storylines in the entire program.

Michael and Holly, The Office
After much searching, Michael eventually found his match, only to have Holly take it away when he moved to Nashua. Even though it's heartbreaking to watch Michael's happiness taken away, they do finally reunite after she goes back to Scranton.

Lily and Marshall, How I Met Your Mother
The notion that Lily and Marshall were destined to be together was unquestionable among HIMYM fans. Their breakup was particularly painful because of this. That's how we found out, too: Marshall sitting in the rain while holding an engagement ring. This breakup episode demonstrates how fantastic the program was in its early years, even though the How I Met Your Mother ending was a little contentious.
