Trump's name on every U.S. paper currency? The US Treasury announces historic change for 250th anniversary—here's what you need to know
A long-standing tradition in American currency is about to change. The U.S. Treasury has announced a move that places President Donald Trump directly onto paper money. It’s a decision that stands out not just for its symbolism but for its timing. For the first time, a sitting president’s signature will be part of U.S. bills. The news was first reported by Vanity Fair.

The U.S. Treasury Department has revealed plans to introduce President Donald Trump’s signature on all newly printed U.S. paper currency, a move that breaks with long-established practice.

What makes this currency change historic?

Traditionally, American banknotes carry only the signatures of the Treasury Secretary and the U.S. Treasurer. Adding a sitting president’s name marks a significant departure from that norm.

The Treasury confirmed that Trump’s signature will appear alongside Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s. The rollout is expected later this year, though additional details have not yet been shared, as per several reports by NYT, CBS News, The AP and Reuters.

Bessent emphasized the significance of the move, stating, “there is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald J. Trump than U.S. dollar bills bearing his name, and it is only appropriate that this historic currency be issued at the Semiquincentennial," as per a report by Reuters.

How will the new U.S. bills look?

While the overall design of the currency remains unchanged, the key difference will be the inclusion of Trump’s signature. This adjustment will be implemented by the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing, which handles all paper money production.

The U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach also supported the move, saying that printing Trump’s signature on the currency “is not only appropriate, but also well deserved.”

What other Trump-related projects are underway?

The announcement comes as part of a broader set of initiatives tied to Trump’s name and image. Earlier this month, a federal arts commission approved the design of a 24-karat gold commemorative coin featuring Trump. The coin is intended to celebrate America’s 250th birthday on July 4, as per several reports by CBS News, The AP and Reuters.

The Treasury also noted that the currency update aligns with the same milestone, linking the change to the country’s semiquincentennial celebrations.

Production responsibilities will remain unchanged, with the Bureau of Engraving and Printing producing paper currency and the U.S. Mint continuing to oversee coin manufacturing.

This development marks a notable shift in how U.S. currency reflects leadership, combining tradition with a new and unprecedented addition.
