Why does Trump want to reopen Alcatraz?
President Donald Trump has asked for $152 million to begin reopening Alcatraz as a “state-of-the-art secure prison facility.” According to the proposal, the Federal Bureau of Prisons would use the money to cover the first-year rebuilding costs.
Last May, Trump wrote that he had directed the Bureau of Prisons, the Department of Justice and other agencies to “reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt Alcatraz, to house America's most ruthless and violent offenders."
He added that it would “serve as a symbol of law, order, and justice." The country had been "plagued by vicious, violent, and repeat criminal offenders, the dregs of society," he said.

What makes Alcatraz so famous?
Located on an island in San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz operated as a federal penitentiary from 1934 to 1963. Its remote location, freezing waters and powerful currents made it one of the most secure prisons in the country.
Authorities long maintained that escape was impossible. During its 29 years of operation, 36 inmates attempted escape in 14 separate incidents, according to the FBI. While no escape was officially recorded as successful, five prisoners remain listed as “missing and presumed drowned”.
The prison housed several infamous inmates, including Al Capone, George ‘Machine Gun’ Kelly and James ‘Whitey’ Bulger.
Its legacy also lives on in popular culture through films such as Escape From Alcatraz and The Rock.

Will the plan actually move forward?
Today, Alcatraz is no longer a prison. Since 1973, it has been managed by the National Park Service and has become one of the most visited tourist attractions in the United States, as per a report by Sky News.
More than 1.2 million people visit the island every year. Still, the president’s budget proposal does not carry legal force. It serves as a roadmap for Congress, which can approve, reject or modify the request as lawmakers prepare federal spending bills.
