Trump Tariffs deadline is nearing on July 9 and Donald Trump has made it clear that he had no plans to extend a 90-day pause on tariffs on most nations beyond the scheduled date. The US President's trade negotiators and their European Union counterparts are working frantically to strike a deal before July 9. But what emerges within the next few days -- in the best case -- could shape up to be more of a rough outline than a full-fledged agreement. The 27-nation bloc, which is the United States' largest trading partner when both goods and services are taken into account, has also been one of the Trump administration's toughest sparring partners over the past four months.

Labor Day holiday 2025

Labor Day holiday 2025 is on September 1. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Friday the Trump administration's various trade deals with other countries could be done by the September 1 Labor Day holiday, citing talks with 18 main US trading partners and new revisions to a deal with China aimed at expediting rare earths shipments.

After a week where tariffs took a back seat to the US strike on Iran's nuclear facilities and the massive tax and spending bill in Congress, the Trump administration's trade negotiations have picked up. The United States sent a new proposal to the European Union on Thursday and India sent a delegation to Washington for more talks.

Will Tariffs Deadline be Extended?

Torsten Slok, chief economist at Apollo Global Management, asked in a blog: "Has Trump outsmarted everyone on tariffs?" Slok said that extending the deadline by a year would give countries and U.S. domestic businesses time to adjust to the new world with permanently higher tariffs while reducing uncertainty, which would help markets.

Speaking to Maria Bartiromo on Fox Business, President Trump reiterated his desire to send “a very fair letter” to each country letting them know what their tariff rates will be. The US president said “I don’t think I’ll need to” extend the pause on higher tariffs, which are supposed to take effect on July 9.

President Trump mused about what one of his letters could say. “Dear Mr. Japan, here’s the story, you’re going to pay a 25% tariff on your cars,” he said.
