Trump Greenland purchase

Trump Buying Greenland: US president Donald Trump’s long-standing interest in acquiring Greenland is back in the spotlight, with new discussions inside the administration to potentially buy the world’s largest island, as per a report.

Marco Rubio’s Denmark Talks Fuel Speculation Of Trump Buying Greenland

Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed this week that he is scheduled to meet Danish officials as soon as next week, fueling fresh attention on the idea of the United States purchasing Greenland, a territory Denmark has controlled since the 1700s. While Rubio declined to directly confirm plans to buy the island, sources familiar with the talks told The New York Post that Trump is “extremely serious” and views a purchase as the most effective path forward.

A State Department spokesperson told The New York Post that, “The United States is eager to build lasting commercial relationships that benefit Americans and the people of Greenland,” a State Department spokesperson said. “Our common adversaries have been increasingly active in the Arctic. That is a concern that the United States, the Kingdom of Denmark, and NATO Allies share,” as quoted in the report.

How Much Could Greenland Cost the US

Greenland’s base price may seem surprisingly modest, with estimates cited by the World Bank suggesting the island could cost at least $3.3 billion, less than 1% of the federal government’s projected $7 trillion in spending this fiscal year. But that estimated price tag doesn’t include the market price of its untapped mineral reserves, as per The New York Post report.

Greenland’s Untapped Mineral Wealth Explained

Greenland is believed to hold vast, untapped reserves of rare earth elements, zinc, iron ore, gold, titanium, uranium, and potentially oil, assets that could be worth trillions of dollars, as per Foundation for Defense of Democracies adjunct senior fellow Peter Doran, reported The New York Post.

Rare Earths, Oil, and Trillions in Hidden Value

The American Action Forum estimated last year that factoring in mineral wealth alone could place Greenland’s value at around $200 billion. Using Iceland as a proxy to gauge Greenland’s strategic importance, some estimates push that valuation to nearly $2.8 trillion.

Greenland’s Role in US Military and Arctic Defense

The island already plays a critical role in US defense strategy. A Cold War-era agreement signed in 1951 allows the US military to operate freely in Greenland, including expanding bases, housing personnel, and controlling air and sea movements. The Pituffik Space Base, located in the far northwest of the island, remains a key US installation.

Denmark Says Greenland Is “Not for Sale”

Denmark and Greenland’s leadership, however, remain firm. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen have reiterated that the territory is “not for sale,” pointing out that existing defense agreements already give the US wide access. Denmark also provides substantial subsidies to Greenland’s roughly 56,000 residents, covering about half of the territory’s budget.

Past US Attempts to Buy Greenland

Still, the idea of a deal is not without precedent. Former President Harry S. Truman attempted to buy Greenland for $100 million in gold in 1946, and the US, under former President Woodrow Wilson, had successfully purchased the Virgin Islands from Denmark.
