The motive behind the shooting remains unconfirmed. Law enforcement has not publicly determined whether the attack was politically or personally motivated.
President Donald Trump, speaking to reporters, said he had 'an indication' of the motive but declined to elaborate. Asked whether a 'trained assassin' was responsible, Trump replied: “I’d rather not say… he’s an animal, a total animal.” He added that investigators were making 'big progress' in the search for the suspect.
Kirk, founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, was struck in the neck during the Sept. 10 event and later died at a hospital. Federal authorities, including the FBI and ATF, are leading the investigation.
Law enforcement officials have cautioned against drawing premature conclusions while evidence is still being processed. Federal agents are analyzing ballistics, surveillance footage, and the engraved ammunition recovered near the scene.
Utah officials have also emphasized the rarity of targeted political violence on college campuses, calling the attack unprecedented in the state.
Meanwhile, Turning Point USA has suspended upcoming events pending security reviews. Analysts note the killing comes at a time of heightened partisan tensions heading into the 2026 midterms, intensifying concerns about threats to public figures.
The investigation remains active, with authorities appealing for public cooperation.
