Trump Greenland plan pushback: US president Donald Trump’s hardline stance on Greenland is facing resistance not only from US allies abroad but also from his own political base at home, as per newly released polling data.

Trump’s Greenland Plan Faces Growing Opposition in the US

A CBS News/YouGov survey conducted between January 14 and 16 shows that a clear majority of Americans oppose the use of military force to take control of Greenland, as per a Newsweek report.

Trump Warns NATO Over Greenland Control

The polling comes as Trump has intensified pressure on Denmark and other NATO partners, warning that anything short of US control of Greenland would be “unacceptable.” The growing tensions prompted leaders of all 27 European Union countries to hold an emergency meeting on Sunday to discuss how to respond to the administration’s tariff threats.

Trump Pushes Tariffs as Greenland Pressure Tactic

While Trump has not ruled out military action, he has so far leaned on economic measures. Speaking to NBC News on Monday, the president declined to comment when asked about using the military. Over the weekend, however, he announced plans to impose a 10 percent tariff starting February 1 on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland, with the rate set to rise to 25 percent on June 1.

Trump Cites National Security Concerns

Trump has framed his push for Greenland as a national security issue, repeatedly claiming the territory is under pressure from Russia and China. In a Truth Social post, he accused Denmark of failing to address what he called the Russian threat in the region. He echoed similar concerns earlier this month aboard Air Force One, pointing to the presence of Russian and Chinese naval vessels.

Denmark Pushes Back on Security Claims

Danish officials have disputed that assessment. Major General Søren Andersen, who commands Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command in Greenland, said there is no current threat from China or Russia, though Denmark continues to monitor and prepare for potential risks.

The tariff threats have drawn a strong response from Europe. In a joint statement issued Sunday, the targeted countries warned that the US approach risks damaging trans-Atlantic ties and could trigger a “dangerous downward spiral,” while reaffirming their full support for Denmark and the people of Greenland, as per the Newsweek report.
