Trump doubles down, announces massive construction project as critics fume over ballroom takedown
President Donald Trump is initiating a latest wave of updates at the Kennedy Center, even as he encounters heavy criticism for the continuing construction of his proposed White House ballroom.

Trump has faced sharp scrutiny following the demolishing of a section of the East Wing to construct his $300 million, 90,000-square-foot ballroom, despite his earlier promise not to “interfere” with the historic landmark’s structure. As per the White House, the renovation is being funded through private investments— a blend of Trump’s own finances and donations from popular corporations such as Amazon, Apple, and Google.

Trump Praises Kennedy Center Upgrades

In a post uploaded on Truth Social early Monday, Trump changed focus to the renovation attempts at the Kennedy Center, stating visible exterior modifications. He cited that the building’s outer columns had been repainted white, substituting what he explained as “the fake looking gold paint that was there for years.”

He further said, “Many major improvements are being made, including seating, carpeting, wall coverings, ceilings, chandeliers, stages, heating and A/C, etc., to what will soon be the finest Arts and Entertainment Center anywhere in the World,” humorously dubbing it the “new TRUMP KENNEDY, whoops, I mean, KENNEDY CENTER.”

Trump also cited that the center would continue to be open in all construction. “I am doing the same thing to the United States of America, but only on a ‘slightly’ larger scale!” he mentioned , showing a metaphor between the country’s changes and the building’s renovation.

Leadership Shake-Up and Cultural Rebranding

The renovations align with Trump’s latest leadership modifications at the Kennedy Center. Earlier this year, he appointed himself as chair, replacing many board members in an attempt to challenge what he regarded as the institution’s “woke agenda.”

Reports also state that Trump hinted at renaming the place after himself, an attempt that has ignited ongoing debate in regard to his influence over significant cultural institutions in Washington, D.C.

White House Ballroom Project Draws Fire

On Truth Social last Monday, Trump celebrated the beginning of demolition for the ballroom, stating it as “completely separate from the White House itself.” He went on to mention, “The East Wing is being fully modernized as part of this process, and will be more beautiful than ever when it is complete!”

The White House confirmed that the ballroom construction is anticipated to conclude before the end of Trump’s current period, making it one of the most major exterior changes from Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1942 addition of the East Wing, which has previously housed the First Lady’s offices and staff.

Originally budgeted at $250 million, the initiative's cost has then increased to $300 million, showing both inflation and design extension since Trump initially proposed the ballroom in June.
