United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday officially labeled the anti-fascist political movement Antifa as a major terrorist organization. The decision came following the assassination of right-wing political activist Charlie Kirk.

"I am pleased to inform our many U.S.A. Patriots that I am designating ANTIFA, A SICK, DANGEROUS, RADICAL LEFT DISASTER, AS A MAJOR TERRORIST ORGANIZATION. I will also be strongly recommending that those funding ANTIFA be thoroughly investigated in accordance with the highest legal standards and practices. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The nation was left stunned after conservative activist Kirk was fatally shot at Utah Valley University. Utah Governor Spencer Cox announced that 22-year-old Tyler Robinson had been arrested in connection with the assassination, taken into custody less than 36 hours after the killing. FBI Director Kash Patel described the swift progress of the investigation as 'historic'.

Authorities later connected him to a rifle inscribed with disturbing messages tied to Antifa slogans, internet memes, and online gaming culture.

According to CNN, it remained unclear what mechanism Trump could employ to enforce the designation, as Antifa has no centralized structure or formal leadership, leaving uncertainty over who or what would actually be targeted.

"This is just one of many actions the president will take to address left wing organizations that fuel political violence," CNN reported quoting a White House official.

According to AP, Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., praised the announcement, after Trump's post, saying: "Antifa seized upon a movement of legitimate grievances to promote violence and anarchy, working against justice for all. The President is right to recognize the destructive role of Antifa by designating them domestic terrorists.”

Trump first suggested the possibility of such a designation for Antifa in 2020 during the wave of nationwide unrest sparked by the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Legal experts at the time argued the move had no legal foundation, would be difficult to implement, and posed free-speech concerns, since adherence to an ideology is not typically treated as a crime.

Trump’s previous FBI director, Christopher Wray, said in testimony in 2020 that antifa is an ideology, not an organization, lacking the hierarchical structure that would usually allow it to be designated as a terror group by the federal government, reported AP.

WHAT IS ANTIFA

Antifa is not a structured organization but rather a loose network of activists grouped into independent local cells. Supporters identify as militant opponents of fascism and have been a prominent presence at demonstrations nationwide, including the violent 'Unite the Right' rally in Charlottesville back in 2017. They say their goal is to block movements they see as racist, homophobic, or authoritarian from gaining influence.

While many participants engage in community organizing and non-violent protest, some believe the use of force is warranted if far-right groups are allowed to mobilize unchecked. Antifa is also known for “doxing” political adversaries and circulating information through online networks - practices that have at times contributed to the spread of misinformation.
