President Donald Trump sparked fresh controversy during a closed-door speech to House Republicans by suggesting the next election should be canceled. Speaking at a private GOP retreat, Trump openly questioned whether he could run again despite constitutional limits. His remarks quickly raised alarms about democratic norms and election integrity.

Why did Trump suggest cancelling the election?

Trump raised the idea while speaking to House Republicans attending a private retreat at the Trump-Kennedy Center. During the speech, he praised his return to office and predicted strong Republican performance in the 2026 midterms, despite polling and analyst concerns following the 2025 electoral blue wave, as per a report by The Mirror.

Referring to Democrats, Trump said, “They had the worst president, did the worst job. They have the worst policy. We have to even run against these people.” He then sarcastically suggested elections shouldn’t even be held if Democrats are allowed to compete, as per a report by The Mirror.

"I won't say cancel the election; they should cancel the election,” Trump said, adding that the “fake news” would label him a dictator if he openly called for it. "Because the fake news will say, 'He wants the elections canceled. He's a dictator."

What did Trump say about a third term?

Trump openly acknowledged that the Constitution does not allow him to serve a third term but continued to speculate aloud about running again. He told the room that if he were allowed, he would win, before adding ominously, “There's gonna be a constitutional movement.”

He repeated claims that he is unfairly labelled a dictator, stating, “They always call me a dictator. Nobody is worse than Obama and the people around Biden.” "I don't think it was Biden. I don't think he even knew what was going on, ok?"

"I could have the most unbelievable four years—and I guess I'm not allowed to run. I'm not sure,” Trump said. “Is there a little something out there that I'm not allowed to run?” "But let's assume I was allowed to run. There's gonna be a constitutional movement," as per a report by The Mirror.

How did Trump revisit the 2020 election claims?

Trump again promoted his false claims that the 2020 election was rigged, despite losing to former President Joe Biden. “The election was rigged,” he said, continuing rhetoric he has repeated for years, as per a report by The Mirror.

He also took aim at Biden personally, suggesting the former president lacked awareness. “[Biden] had no idea what happened,” Trump said, adding, “He still doesn't.”

Trump has filed numerous lawsuits related to the 2020 election, nearly all of which were dismissed for lack of evidence or standing. Lawsuits filed against Trump over election denial were also dismissed as of November 2025.

What context surrounded the remarks?

Trump’s comments coincided with the fifth anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol insurrection. Earlier the same day, former Vice President Mike Pence appeared to criticize Trump, accusing him of failing to ensure a peaceful transfer of power.

Pence narrowly escaped harm during the riot, where one person was killed and five others later died, some by suicide. Trump later pardoned all but 14 of more than 1,200 convicted rioters, as per a report by The Mirror.

During his GOP retreat speech, Trump also appeared disoriented at times, making a baffling admission when he said, “what the hell is going on.”
