Trump and Mamdani are two friends chilling in the surprising Oval Office encounter: From ‘communist’ to ‘rational’
President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani met in the Oval Office. They set aside past bitter exchanges to find common ground. Both leaders expressed shared goals for New York City's future. They discussed crime reduction,...

The encounter marked a sharp turnaround from past barbs, Trump notoriously calling Mamdani a “communist lunatic” and a “Jew hater,” while Mamdani publicly labeling Trump a “fascist” and a “despot.”
New found common ground
Yet, during the closed-door meeting, Trump remarked, “We found common ground on more topics than I anticipated,” highlighting shared priorities for New York City’s future. Mamdani, 34, described the discussions as focusing “not on our differences, which are numerous, but rather on our shared goal of serving New Yorkers.”
Trump, 79, notably praised Mamdani and dismissed Islamophobic allegations against him, signaling a thaw in relations.
Trump no more a ‘fascist’?
When reporters questioned Mamdani on calling Trump a fascist in the past, Trump responded in support, saying “You can just say yes [to calling me a fascist], it’s easier, I don’t mind.” This exchange underscored a pragmatic pivot from hostility to tentative partnership.
The meeting also featured mutual acknowledgments: Trump expressed willingness to live in a Mamdani-administered New York and even said, “The better he performs, the happier I am.” Mamdani reciprocated by appreciating Trump, indicating that many of his supporters appreciate concerns traditionally associated with conservatives.
‘Rational’ Mamdani
When asked if Trump believes Elise Stefanik's criticism calling Zohran Mamdani a jihadist, he said “No, I don’t, I met with a man who is a very rational person”
Both leaders expressed their commitment to New York City, with Trump mentioning “I expect to be helping him, not hurting him, because I want NYC to be great. Look, I love NYC, that’s where I come from”.
Mamdani, a vocal critic of Trump’s immigration policies, had rallied support around affordable housing, public transit improvements, and social equity. Despite this, both men now voiced optimism about collaboration on issues like crime reduction, housing affordability, and food costs.
