After 'True Detective' Season 4 came to an end, Warner Bros. signed a deal with 'Night Country' showrunner Issa Lopez and now she will steer Season 5. 'Forbes' has reported that HBO has taken over the franchise from creator Nic Pizzolatto and now Lopez will create and develop new projects for the Discovery-owned streamer. Confirming the move, HBO’s Head of Drama Francesca Orsi said in a statement that alongside the impeccable performances of Jodie Foster and Reis Kali, Issa Lopez has made this installation of the franchise a massive success and they are lucky to have her as part of the family.

Night Country' topped the first season of the crime anthology with 12.7 million viewers across multiple platforms. It ranks as the most-watched season of 'True Detective'. As creator Pizzolatto’s overall contract with HBO came to an end and the showrunner opted to move to Disney, HBO decided to hand the franchise over to someone with a new voice, retaining ownership of the series.
