Detroit’s offense erupted with power throughout the night. Wenceel Perez opened the scoring in the fourth inning with a solo shot after battling through a 10-pitch at-bat, becoming the ninth Tiger this season to reach double-digit homers.
An inning later, Colt Keith doubled, Gleyber Torres walked, and Kerry Carpenter cleared the bases with a two-run triple. Riley Greene followed with his 29th homer of the season, stretching the lead to 5-0.
Sweeney set the tone in the sixth with a leadoff triple and came home on Keith’s sacrifice fly. The Tigers then piled on in the seventh against reliever Tayler Scott.
Astros starter Spencer Arrighetti (1-4) was tagged for five runs and seven hits over five innings. Houston’s best scoring chance came in the opening frame, when they loaded the bases with two outs. But Victor Caratini’s flyout ended the threat, and the Astros managed only five hits overall. Detroit’s dominant win set the tone for the three-game set at Comerica Park.
