Trey Reed’s death at Delta State University
Demartravion “Trey” Reed’s family has retained recognized civil rights attorney Ben Crump, carrying their demand for a full, independent, and transparent investigation. Reed, a 21-year-old student at Delta State University was found hanging from a tree on campus early Monday morning, September 15, 2025.

Crump, known for his work in high-profile civil rights litigation, stated as per Clarion Ledger: “We cannot accept vague conclusions when so many questions remain. I stand with this family, and I will lead a team of civil rights leaders and organizations in pursuing transparency and answers for Trey’s family”.

Reed’s family, represented locally by attorney Vanessa Jones, publicly called for answers, emphasizing that their primary goal is to uncover the truth, starting with attaining an independent autopsy, while withholding accusations against any party.

Trey Reed’s body was discovered near the university’s pickleball courts, leading to an immediate closure of campus activities and widespread shock throughout the university community. Faculty, students, and Reed’s family have expressed deep concern and grief, gathering for prayer vigils and seeking answers about the circumstances surrounding his death.

Reed’s family described the late student as joyful, obedient, and full of promise, reiterating the family’s determination to “bring the truth to the light,” Capital B reported.

Official statements and investigation status

Delta State University Police Chief, Michael Peeler and Delta State University President, Dan Ennis announced shortly after the discovery that there is currently no evidence of foul play in the case and no ongoing threat to campus safety.

Bolivar County Coroner Randolph Seals Jr. also issued a preliminary report stating Reed “did not suffer any lacerations, contusions, compound fractures, broken bones, or injuries consistent with an assault”.

Law enforcement agencies including campus police, the Bolivar County Sheriff’s Office, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, and Cleveland Police Department are collectively investigating the case.

Community reaction

The incident sparked a wave of speculation and controversy, with online rumors alleging Reed may have been lynched and sustained fractures inconsistent with suicide. These claims were refuted by the Coroner and campus police, who cited absence of physical injuries or signs of assault.

As of now, Reed’s family awaits further investigation results. Campus counseling services have been made available to students as the university and its broader community mourn Reed’s loss.
