Crump, known for his work in high-profile civil rights litigation, stated as per Clarion Ledger: “We cannot accept vague conclusions when so many questions remain. I stand with this family, and I will lead a team of civil rights leaders and organizations in pursuing transparency and answers for Trey’s family”.
Reed’s family, represented locally by attorney Vanessa Jones, publicly called for answers, emphasizing that their primary goal is to uncover the truth, starting with attaining an independent autopsy, while withholding accusations against any party.
Trey Reed’s body was discovered near the university’s pickleball courts, leading to an immediate closure of campus activities and widespread shock throughout the university community. Faculty, students, and Reed’s family have expressed deep concern and grief, gathering for prayer vigils and seeking answers about the circumstances surrounding his death.

Delta State University Police Chief, Michael Peeler and Delta State University President, Dan Ennis announced shortly after the discovery that there is currently no evidence of foul play in the case and no ongoing threat to campus safety.Law enforcement agencies including campus police, the Bolivar County Sheriff’s Office, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, and Cleveland Police Department are collectively investigating the case.
