Total solar eclipse: Delta Air Lines flights for up-close view, fare, tickets, and all you need to know

Delta Air Lines has made special arrangements for those who want to watch the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. To catch this opportunity, Delta flight 1218 will take off from Austin at 12:15 p.m. CT on April 8, 2024, and land at Detroit after more than four hours. It will offer passengers a chance to view the solar eclipse "at its peak".

What is solar eclipse?

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon comes between the sun and the Earth, blocking it completely for a brief period, the sun can not be seen during that period and there is complete darkness on the earth. The next total solar eclipse could be seen from the US in 2044.

According to ABC News, the passengers onboard the Delta Air Lines flight will have an up-close view of the solar eclipse as the flight passes through the specific locations on Earth that fall in the center of the moon's shadow during the eclipse.

NASA has said that beginning in Texas, the path of totality will pass through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

Delta Air Lines said the carrier will use an A220-300 plane to “offer especially premium viewing due to the aircraft’s extra large windows.” It has also said that its flights “have been designed to maximize time within the path of totality"
