The trial of rapper Tony Lanez began on Monday in Los Angeles. The opening statements were recorded in the case against Tony, who’s accused of shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the foot. According to a report by The Guardian, Tony could face 22 years in prison if he is found guilty of the charges levelled against him.
Tony Lanez’s real name is Daystar Peterson. Per media reports, the prosecution has alleged that Peterson shot Megan with a semi-automatic firearm following an argument with her inside a vehicle. The alleged felony incident took place in Hollywood Hills. However, Peterson has pleaded not guilty to all the charges, including those of shooting, assaulting, and concealing a firearm in the vehicle.
The defense attorney for Peterson, George Mgdesyan, said during the opening statement that Megan’s assistant Kelsey Harris was the one who shot her following a verbal and physical confrontation. The defense added that it was a case of jealousy.
As per media reports, the incident occurred in July 2020, when Peterson was arrested for a concealed weapon. While Megan was also found at the scene, she did not disclose that Peterson had shot her in the foot until August 2020, when the Texas-born artist said she was shot twice. Since then, the two rappers have had an ugly feud playing on the internet, with both using their art to push their narrative of the incident.

Peterson has largely maintained innocence and accused Megan’s management team, Roc Nation, of framing him. In February 2022, Peterson tweeted that she was in a relationship with Megan and one of her friends simultaneously, and got caught, which led to the feud. Megan had categorically declined to be in a romantic relationship with the Canadian rapper. However, prosecutors have stated that Megan would testify that the two rappers were intimate at some point.
