Expressing disbelief in the TikTok video, Ettinger remarked, "Just when you thought the Toronto market couldn't get any worse, it did. This is so unhinged. Renting out a space in your bed for 900 [Canadian] dollars a month? No wonder so many people hate it here."
However, this unusual housing trend appears to be part of a broader phenomenon. Emerging evidence suggests the rise of "hot bedding," a practice where individuals share a bed with strangers to mitigate the impact of soaring rental prices.
A 2021 survey conducted by the University of Technology Sydney, polling 7,000 international students in Sydney and Melbourne, revealed that three percent of respondents had resorted to hot-bedding as a creative solution to combat exorbitant rental prices.
