In a stark illustration of the housing challenges faced in Toronto, a TikTok video by realtor Anya Ettinger has drawn attention to an unconventional accommodation offer posted on Facebook Marketplace. The now-deleted post proposed renting out half of a bed for an astonishing 900 Canadian dollars per month.

"Looking for an easy-going female to share the master bedroom and the one Queen-sized bed. I have been previously sharing the bedroom which only has one queen size with a roommate I found on Facebook, and it worked out perfectly well!" the post read.

Expressing disbelief in the TikTok video, Ettinger remarked, "Just when you thought the Toronto market couldn't get any worse, it did. This is so unhinged. Renting out a space in your bed for 900 [Canadian] dollars a month? No wonder so many people hate it here."

However, this unusual housing trend appears to be part of a broader phenomenon. Emerging evidence suggests the rise of "hot bedding," a practice where individuals share a bed with strangers to mitigate the impact of soaring rental prices.

A 2021 survey conducted by the University of Technology Sydney, polling 7,000 international students in Sydney and Melbourne, revealed that three percent of respondents had resorted to hot-bedding as a creative solution to combat exorbitant rental prices.
