Tornado warning: Strong thunderstorms with winds at 90 mph hit North California, NWS issues advisory for Kentucky and other towns

Tornado has been predicted for the Tennessee Valley and Southeast US even as strong thunderstorms hit Calaveras County in California.

National Weather Service (NWS) has predicted "Tornado/Severe Thunderstorm" warning for areas of the Tennessee Valley and Southeast US. The NWS' prediction has come even as thunderstorms moving into the Sierra foothills produced a tornado with winds up to 90 mph in Calaveras County of California.

"Tornado/Severe Thunderstorm Watches (16-20) have been issued for ongoing strong to severe storms across portions of the upper OH Valley and Southeast US. Severe Weather will remain possible through this afternoon and evening," NWS Storm Prediction Center tweeted.

"Severe thunderstorms are expected today across portions of the Tennessee Valley into the Southeast. Several damaging wind gusts are likely, though occasional bouts of large hail and at least a few tornadoes are also possible," the Storm Prediction Center has said in its "Forecast Today and/or Tonight".


Storm Hits California

A line of thunderstorms moving into the Sierra foothills produced a tornado with winds up to 90 mph (145 kph) that tore up trees for about a half-mile before dawn Tuesday in rural Calaveras County, 85 miles (137 km) east of San Francisco. A few minutes earlier, gusts estimated at 75 mph (121 kph) lifted a large horse barn over a fence, damaged trees and other barn roofs, the Sacramento National Weather Service office said.


17 People Dead

The latest rains were expected to impact only impact Northern California, giving the south a break until more wet weather arrives by the weekend. At least 17 people have died in the storms battering the state.

Governor Gavin Newsom said that more than half of California's 58 counties were declared disaster areas.
