A tornado is a violently rotating column of air that extends from a thunderstorm cloud down to the ground. It’s one of the most powerful and destructive weather phenomena on Earth.

In scientific terms, a tornado forms when warm, moist air near the ground meets cooler, dry air above it, creating instability. Strong wind shear (changes in wind speed or direction with height) can cause the air to start spinning. When that spinning air is tilted vertically and intensifies, it can develop into a tornado.
