According to the Storm Prediction Center, more than 40 million people from southern Texas eastward to Georgia and northward to central Indiana and Illinois are at risk of severe weather on Tuesday.

According to the centre, the most significant risk of severe weather, including tornadoes, giant hail, and high winds, is for around 1.2 million people from east-central Louisiana through much of Mississippi, including Jackson.

The threat for that area - a Level 4 of 5 or moderate - is unusual for this time of year, as is the chance of tornadoes, which are more common in the spring and summer.

According to Bill Bunting, chief of prediction operations at the Storm Prediction Center, severe thunderstorms in the fall and winter may be pretty damaging. They may occasionally take people off guard because thunderstorms occur less frequently during the colder months.
