America’s colleges and universities have weathered a turbulent year marked by budget cuts, political pressure from the White House, and looming demographic shifts expected to drive enrollment declines. Yet one of higher education’s most enduring rituals returned unchanged with the release of the US News & World Report college rankings. US News has defended its rankings as an essential service for students and families navigating one of life’s most expensive decisions. The publisher shut down its print magazine in 2010, but it says more than 100 million users visit its education website annually.

Despite the turmoil, the 2025 lists showed remarkable stability. Princeton University once again claimed the No. 1 spot among national universities, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University. Stanford University remained at No. 4, though it now shares the position with Yale University.

Williams College continued to hold the top ranking among liberal arts colleges, while Spelman College was again recognized as the highest-ranked historically Black college or university. One notable shift occurred among public universities, the University of California, Berkeley, rose to the top, trading places with UCLA.

Few major shifts in the top 50

Among the top 50 national universities, only three institutions saw notable movement:

  • Northeastern University jumped eight spots, now tied at No. 46.
  • The University of Chicago rose to No. 6.
  • The California Institute of Technology fell to No. 11.
The shifts were modest compared with two years ago, when a major methodology overhaul sent some elite universities tumbling in the standings.

Polls in recent years suggest rankings may be losing influence over students and parents. Still, many administrators assume the industry will remain part of the admissions landscape for years to come.

How US News calculates its college rankings

For more than 40 years, US News & World Report has published its Best Colleges rankings, evaluating more than 1,700 institutions using up to 17 factors that measure academic quality and student outcomes. The 2026 edition continues with the same core methodology.

Within these categories, institutions are compared on factors like graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, financial support, and academic reputation. Scores are standardized with others measured relative to that benchmark.

US News relies on data collected directly from schools through statistical surveys, supplemented by third-party sources such as the US Department of Education’s IPEDS database, the College Scorecard, the Treasury Department, and Elsevier. Each school’s top academic official must certify the data, with non-certified schools flagged in the rankings.
