Too hot to hire? Rejected after 50 job interviews - woman says her stunning looks were the dealbreaker

21-year-old, Alê Gaúcha from Brazil, says she has attended more than 50 unsuccessful job interviews while searching for an opportunity to work as a nanny. Despite her having necessary qualifications and training, she believes her appearance has constantly turned against her.

“I would go in confident, present my certificates, talk about everything I had learned, but no one ever got back to me,” Gaúcha cited to NeedToKnow. “At first, I thought it was due to lack of experience, but after so many attempts, I started to believe the reason was something else,” the Brazilian beauty added.

Problem of Being ‘Too Attractive’

Gaúcha’s good looks seems to have complicated her job hunt. In the nannying position, some families, especially women, may be refused to hire attractive or good looking caregivers, worried it might result in marital issues.


“I wanted to show my professional side, but it seemed like no one could see it,” she said.

Her story shows what she thinks is the opposite of “pretty privilege,” where appearance usually offers advantages in social or professional scenarios. Instead, Gaúcha cites her attractiveness as having restricted her opportunities.

Turning Setbacks Into Opportunities

But, Gaúcha hasn’t let her beauty go unused. While job searching, the Brazilian started posting her pictures online, and soon her social media following flooded. Now, she’s earning money as a content creator and says it’s a fulfilling pursuit even if this was not her real plan.

“Even if I don’t practice (nannying) today, the nanny I once was is still with me,” she cited. “I still feel connected to that experience because I dedicated myself and prepared for it. On one side, I was looking for stability; on the other, I found freedom.”
