Tom Cruise's biggest movie launch: Top Gun: Maverick breaks Memorial Day weekend box-office record, earns whopping $151 mn

After multiple delays following the Coronavirus pandemic, Tom Cruise's 'Top Gun: Maverick' takes the Memorial Day opening by storm. The film earned a whopping $151 million over the Memorial Day weekend, becoming the biggest launch of Cruise's career.

The movie has the second-best opening, falling behind Johnny Depp's starrer 'Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End". Back in 2007, the film earned $153 million on its release.

On Friday, Top Gun earned over $19 million in previews over 4,700 theatres in North America alone. Even though Cruise is one of Hollywood's biggest stars, his last biggest opening was back in 2005. The 2018 film 'Mission: Impossible Fallout" earned about $61.2 million, but the Hollywood star's films have always opened up with less than $60 million at the box office.


Why Was Top Gun's Release Date Rescheduled Multiple Times, And When Was The Movie Planned To Be Released?
Top Gun received years of setbacks, all due to the Covid-19 pandemic that affected human lives throughout the globe. Talking about the film's release, Tom Cruise said that it would never make its debut on a streaming network. The star would even contact his fellow crew members and celebrities to assure them every time whenever the release date was pushed back.

Initially planned to be released back in July 2019, the movie's release was postponed to August 2018 to provide the product with enough time to work on the flight sequences.

Then, before the whole world shut down in March 2020, the release date was set to June 24, 2020, by Paramount Pictures. But later, it was again rescheduled to December. The rescheduling continued until Top Gun was pushed back to April 2021, and the release was scheduled for November and September. And finally, the release date was finalized as of May 27, 2022.
