Alejandro Zendejas gave Toluca a dream start as he scored in the very first minute to make it 1-0. However, Franco Romero fired back ten minutes later to level terms for América.
América showed a slight edge in the first half, but Toluca played smart, disrupting numerous attacking moves with timely fouls. This strategy unsettled the Águilas, leading to lapses in focus at key moments throughout the match.
Bruno Méndez came up with a fine header to put Toluca ahead again during the closing minutes of the first half. As expected, América dominated the early stages of the second half, controlling possession and launching constant attacks.
Paulinho sealed the victory in the 70th minute, scoring Toluca’s third goal and putting the match out of América’s reach. With the score at 3-1, any hopes of a comeback for the Águilas were effectively extinguished.
América were reduced to ten men in the 89th minute when Igor Lichnovsky was shown a red card for a reckless challenge that injured Helinho, further compounding their frustration in a match that had already slipped away.
