Times Square’s NYE ball drop gets historic first change in over 100 years — here’s what’s new
The globally renowed New Year’s Eve Ball Drop in New York City is ready to experience its first significant transformation in over a century as the city gets ready to welcome 2026. Each year, crowds gather in Times Square to witness the glowing ball descend a flagpole at midnight, signaling the conclusion of one year and the beginning of the next. This legendary tradition started in 1907, with the ball reaching the bottom at the stroke of midnight a custom that has captivated audiences globally ever since.

Patriotic Design to Celebrate 250 Years of the United States

For the first time in over 100 years, the New Year’s Eve ball will showcase a patriotic makeover to honor 2026, signaling the 250th anniversary of the United States. The ball will glow in red, white, and blue, and organizers have incorporated a second confetti drop alongside other patriotic upgrades to the event.

As the nation is getting ready to celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence, organizers promise an anniversary “for the ages.”

“I’m telling you right now, whatever you’re imagining, it’s going to be much more than that,” America250 Chair Rosie Rios told ABC News.

“It’s going to be one for the ages, the most inspirational celebration this country and maybe the world has ever seen.”

A Historic Second Ball Drop in July

The celebratory year will formally start with the traditional December 31 ball drop. However, in an unprecedented move, there will also be a second ball drop in Times Square in 2026 set for July 3. This signifies the initial time in 120 years that the ball will drop on a day other than New Year’s Eve.

It is anticipated to be another spectacular celebration, “in the same beautiful style that Times Square knows how to do it,” Rios stated.

Public Reaction to the Patriotic Changes

The news of the patriotic updates and the July ball drop has created excitement among Americans.
