Apple CEO Tim Cook made an unexpected trip to China as the iPhone 15 faced a challenging debut in the market. During his visit, Cook showed his support for gamers at an Apple store in Chengdu, where they were playing the popular mobile game "Honor of Kings," developed by TiMi Studio, a subsidiary of Chinese tech giant Tencent.

Cook praised the game's origins in Chengdu and its global success on Apple's App Store in a post on the Chinese social media platform Weibo. He also shared a video of himself cheering on the gamers, highlighting the game's significance in the Chinese market and its substantial contribution to Apple's App Store revenue in the country.

Cook's visit to China occurred shortly after the iPhone 15, Apple's flagship smartphone, was released to a seemingly lukewarm reception. Counterpoint Research reported a 4.5% decline in iPhone 15 series unit sales during the first 17 days compared to the iPhone 14.

Meanwhile, Chinese tech giant Huawei, despite facing U.S. sanctions, quietly launched a new smartphone with high-end semiconductor technology and 5G connectivity, signalling its intent to reenter the mobile market. Huawei, once a dominant force in China and a major competitor to Apple, has faced challenges due to U.S. sanctions and has fallen to the sixth position in the Chinese smartphone market. However, recent reports suggest that Huawei has regained the top spot, surpassing Apple as the number one smartphone maker in China.

Ethan Qi, associate director at Counterpoint Research, attributed Apple's challenging start to various factors, including subdued consumer sentiment, the iPhone 15's performance compared to its predecessor, and increased competition in the high-end smartphone market. These factors have collectively affected Apple's initial iPhone 15 sales in the country.
