Navient student loan settlement

Student loan settlement $2000: Student loan borrowers are beginning to receive payments of up to $2,000 as part of a $100 million class action settlement with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), as per a report.

Why Navient Was Accused of Steering Borrowers Into Forbearance

The lawsuit targeted Navient, one of the largest student loan servicers in the US (formerly known as Sallie Mae), accusing the company of improperly steering borrowers into forbearance, as per The Sun report. While forbearance paused payments, interest continued to accrue, leaving many students with growing balances and longer repayment timelines.

How Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) Could Have Helped Borrowers

The CFPB argued that struggling borrowers could have benefited from income-driven repayment (IDR) plans to reduce their bills, but Navient allegedly did not guide them toward these options. The lawsuit also claimed that some disabled borrowers, including veterans, experienced mishandled payments and credit harm, as per The Sun report.

The Impact on Students and Veterans Affected by Navient

Kevin Thompson, CEO of 9i Capital Group and host of the 9innings podcast, told Newsweek that, “The real victims here are the borrowers whose credit was damaged and whose financial lives were thrown off course for years," adding that, “Interest kept compounding, balances grew, and repayment timelines stretched far longer than they should have,” as quoted by The Sun.

Navient Settlement Details: Refunds, Fines, and Restrictions

As part of the settlement, Navient has agreed to pay $100 million in refunds and a $20 million fine. While the company has not admitted wrongdoing, it is barred from servicing federal student loans under the agreement, as per The Sun report.

How Borrowers Will Receive Their $2,000 Payments

Those who had Navient loans placed into forbearance in 2017 or earlier are eligible to claim payments. Some borrowers have already received checks ranging from $50 to $2,000, and no claim form was required, as per The Sun report.
