Thousands of runners assembled in Memphis to honour the late Liza Fletcher by finishing her morning jog. The gesture comes a week after she was abducted and murdered. Before dawn, hundreds gathered and stood in a moment of silence to honour Fletcher. Liza Fletcher was a mother of two children and a local teacher. Danielle Heineman, the organizer of the run, said all the people have gathered in Liza's honour and want to show that women in their city can run whenever they want, whether at 4 in the morning or 10 at night, without having to cover their bodies entirely. She said the women have this and there were no excuses. Liza Fletcher was abducted last week and killed. Cleotha Henderson is the suspect and is being held without the option of bail. If charges are proved and Henderson is convicted, it could make Henderson eligible to die by the death penalty.

In Thousands

Heineman told her fellow runners that everyone had gathered to finish Liza's run and honour her. Around 200 people collected before the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception at 3:45 a.m., which is around four miles away from where Liza was kidnapped. The crowd increased to around 1,000 runners just before the start of the run at 4:20 a.m. Simultaneously, around 1,000 more people gathered at the end of the route. Police closed several blocks and stayed for protection while some women spoke about teaming up as a buddy system for their safety. Doug Christofferson waited on the church's steps as he was there to support his wife, who participated in the run. He said the movement started a few days back with a couple of girls using Facebook to increase awareness. Once word got out, around 1,000 people gathered in Liza's honor.
