Water Bottle trick
With a few everyday materials and a simple light source, it can become a handy camping lantern that spreads light more effectively around your surroundings.
The DIY project combines a water bottle, cardboard rings, a tap light, ribbon, glue, and hook-and-loop fasteners to create a reusable lantern. Besides being a practical camping accessory, it also demonstrates an interesting scientific concept that changes the way light travels.
How do you build the DIY lantern?
Glue the stack of cardboard rings together, then attach the circle with the smaller opening to the top. The solid circle stays separate and becomes the removable base.
Hook-and-loop fastener dots are attached to both the bottom of the cardboard housing and the removable base, allowing easy access to switch the light on and off.
Once the tap light is placed inside the housing facing downward, glue the water bottle securely to the top so its base covers the opening where the light shines through.
Why does the water bottle spread the light?
Instead, the refraction causes the light to disperse in all directions, creating a broader and more even glow around the campsite.
What makes this camping hack so effective?
Rather than producing a narrow beam like a standard light source, the water bottle helps spread illumination across a larger area. That wider distribution of light makes it easier to see everything around your campsite instead of lighting only a single spot. The project combines simple materials with an easy-to-understand science lesson, making it both practical and educational.
By turning on the light and placing the finished lantern in a dark area, you can immediately see how refraction transforms a focused beam into a softer, more useful source of light.
FAQs
Why does the water bottle make the light brighter?
It doesn't make it brighter; it spreads the light over a wider area through refraction.
What science principle makes this lantern work?
The lantern works because of refraction, which changes the direction of light as it passes through water.
