What Happened

A two-year-old child in Fresno, California, accidentally shot and killed his 22-year-old mother, Jessinya Mina, on Friday evening. The incident occurred at Butterfly Grove Apartments. The toddler accessed an unsecured 9mm handgun and fired a single shot, striking his mother.

Police Investigation

The Fresno Police Department stated that the victim’s boyfriend, Andrew Sanchez, was arrested at the scene. He faces charges of felony negligent storage of a firearm and felony child endangerment. Police discovered that Sanchez had left the loaded handgun in a place accessible to children.

Sanchez has no criminal history. Authorities are investigating the firearm's ownership and circumstances surrounding its storage.

According to investigators, the couple was preparing for an outing and relaxing on their bed when the shooting occurred. The toddler found the gun in their bedroom and unintentionally fired it. Mina was struck while lying on the bed.

After the shooting, Sanchez and others attempted to save Mina by administering first aid. Emergency responders arrived shortly after and transported her to a hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Children’s Custody

The victim’s children are now under the care of their grandparents. Child Protective Services was informed of the incident, following standard protocol.

The victim’s sister has started an online fundraiser to help cover funeral expenses. The campaign describes Mina as a devoted mother and a loving individual.
