This city in the U.S. could be struck by a volcano that may erupt after 800 years, is your home nearby?
Sitka is in danger as Mount Edgecumbe, an 800-year-old dormant volcano in Alaska, is displaying signs of an impending eruption.

A dormant volcano is often thought to indicate that an eruption is not possible. This is untrue. Even a dormant volcano has the potential to erupt; it has just not done so in a very long time. A volcano is immediately placed on red alert if there is a chance of an eruption. This indicates that the local community and its residents are immediately at risk of harm. This is true for the Italian volcanoes Mount Etna and Mount Stromboli. When they erupted in 2024, residents experienced travel chaos and unrest. Thousands of passengers were left stranded when flights that were intended to transport people to and from the area were cancelled.

In Alaska, Mount Edgecumbe is situated south of Kruzof Island. At 3,201 feet, it is less than 10 miles east of the Queen Charlotte Fault. Despite being very close to several houses and cities, it has not had a significant eruption in over 4,000 years. Before recent updates altered their perception, locals living close to the volcano believed they were safe. Research shows there was a period when the volcano was more active.
While the latest eruption happened 800 years ago, there is also evidence of an eruption 1,150 years ago. A 2010 research paper found ash in deposits in Sitka Sound. The authors wrote that a similar eruption would pose a significant risk to local population centres. Residents surround the volcano, but this is the first time in thousands of years that the volcano has shown any threat to those people.
The mountain was known to the local Tlingit tribe as L'ux, which translates to flash or blinking. They likely found the mountain when it was erupting or smoking. Even though an eruption is still unlikely, seismologists will keep an eye on Mount Edgecumbe's activity. The sleeping volcano is roughly fifteen miles from the city of Sitka. Though unlikely, Sitka runs the risk of being the closest city to a potential eruption. Hannah Dietterich, a research geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey at the Alaska Volcano Observatory, stated that there are indications of instability.

Seismometers are being positioned all over Mount Edgecumbe by scientists. These are required because earthquakes that are undetectable to humans can be easily detected by monitoring equipment.
FAQs
Why is the activity of Mount Edgecumbe concerning right now?Although Mount Edgecumbe has not erupted in 800 years, recent seismic activity suggests that it might. Small earthquakes have been observed by researchers near the volcano, which raises the possibility that it is about to erupt and seriously endanger the communities nearby.
How close is Mount Edgecumbe to populated areas?
About fifteen miles separate Mount Edgecumbe from Sitka, Alaska. This proximity makes Sitka the closest city at risk if the volcano were to erupt, prompting heightened monitoring and caution among residents.
