In the United States, baby naming rules differ by state. Some names are banned by law. Parents must follow certain rules when naming their children.

List of Banned Baby Names in the US

Certain names are not allowed in the United States. According to USbirthcertificates.com, at least 11 names have been legally banned. These include names with religious figures, offensive terms, or symbols. Here is the list:

Symbols and Numbers Are Not Allowed

Most states do not allow numbers, emoji, or special characters in names. Names like “@” or “1069” are rejected. These rules are often in place to make official records easier to manage.

State-Specific Rules Differ

Each US state has its own naming policies. Some states allow flexibility, while others have strict rules. California and New Jersey ban names that include obscene or offensive words. Hawaii and Alaska allow symbols from native languages.

North Carolina allows the tilde (ñ), but Virginia does not. Illinois and South Carolina permit names with numbers and symbols. New York limits first and middle names to 30 characters, and last names to 40.

Texas allows 100 characters for first and middle names. Massachusetts limits each name (first, middle, last) to 40 characters. Arizona allows a combined limit of 141 characters.

Parent’s Marital Status

In some states, laws decide a baby's last name based on the parents’ marital status. In Mississippi, the baby gets the father's last name unless the parents request a change.

In Louisiana, if the mother is unmarried and gives birth within 300 days, the baby gets her last name. In Florida, if the parents do not agree on a name, the court will assign one.
