‘There is a bomb on the flight’: American Airlines flight delayed after passenger’s Wi-Fi hotspot name causes panic

The hotspot name that triggered the panic was reportedly “There is a bomb on the flight,” according to information provided by the flight crew.

A Wi-Fi hotspot with the word “bomb” in its name reportedly caused alarm among the crew of an American Airlines flight last week, delaying its departure from Austin, Texas.

The flight was bound for Charlotte, North Carolina, according to a news report.

A passenger on the flight, 63-year-old Bruce Steen, said that he was heading back home from a meeting when the incident occurred on February 7.

Steen said that a young man approached a flight attendant and showed her something on his tablet screen. According to Steen, the stewardess then contacted the cockpit. This was followed by the captain announcing that the aircraft would be returning to the gate.

Steen told ABC News that the pilot cited an “administrative issue” as the reason for the decision.

Hotspot renamed

As the plane taxied back to the gate, the crew reported the incident to the Department of Aviation and the Austin Police Department, ABC News reported.

A few minutes later, the pilot announced that “somebody renamed their hotspot,” Steen recalled.

The hotspot name that triggered the panic was reportedly “There is a bomb on the flight,” according to information provided by the crew.

Passengers were deboarded

Steen said that a police officer boarded the flight and urged anyone responsible for the prank to come forward, emphasising that admitting to it would be handled differently than launching a full-scale investigation.

When no one stepped up, passengers were escorted off the plane in batches, according to Steen.

Each passenger was required to display their hotspot names to the police officers, Steen said.
