Inspired by the massive success of the superhero drama 'Moving', Disney+ has decided to pick up more original Korean dramas this year. Coming from prolific Korean genre writer-director Park Hoon-jung, 'The Tyrant' will land on Disney+, reports 'The Hollywood Reporter'. Starring Jo Yoon-soo as skilled infiltrator Chae Jagyeong; Cha Seung-won as cold-blooded mercenary Lim Sang; Kim Seon-ho as Director Choe, and Kim Kang-woo as U.S. intelligence agent Paul, the film creates an atmosphere of suspense and disbelief.

Thrilling Story

'The Tyrant' narrates the thrilling story of the race to find a biological weapon that has been stolen during a secret handover between Korean and US intelligence agencies. The official synopsis suggests that the Korean government’s plan is exposed by U.S. intelligence agencies after years of toiling away on a secret project. The US becomes furious at being kept in the dark about the project and it demands all samples be handed over and the project be closed down. But it does not happen, rather, the agents from both sides work together to avoid the new formula from falling into the wrong hands.

Park Hoon-jung's streaming debut

Park Hoon-jung will make his streaming debut with 'The Tyrant'. His recent productions include 'The Witch: Part 1', 'The Subversion', 'The Witch: Part 2', 'One, Night in Paradise' and 'The Childe'.


According to 'ScreenDaily', 'The Tyrant' has been pre-sold to Germany, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, Thailand, Film) and CIS. It made its world premiere in Toronto last year and has received further post-production before its expected release this August.

Disney+ picks up other K-dramas

Disney+ also picked up Kim Ji-eun’s 'Wonderful World', 'Shin Yeon-shick’s period drama 'Uncle Samsik', and the television debut of Parasite actor 'Song Kang-ho'. 'The Tyrant' is expected to be released in 2024.
