Can you imagine a technology that allows the bereaved to watch their dead loved ones decaying in the grave with the help of high-resolution cameras so that the grief becomes permanent? David Cronenberg’s latest film, 'The Shrouds' explores this possibility. When this film premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 20, it received a standing ovation from the audience for 3.5 minutes. 'The Shrouds' is based on the real story of an industrialist named Karsh, whose wife died after fighting cancer. But he thought that the death of her wife was part of a larger conspiracy of the medical establishment. The film has personal resonance with the life of Cronenberg as his wife too died of cancer.

'The Shrouds': Inspired by the death of director's wife

Talking to 'Variety', the director of the film said that all of his films are personal in some way or another, 'The Shrouds' was partly inspired by the death of his wife in 2017. Explaining the beginning of the movie, he said that before the COVID-19 pandemic gripped the world, he went to Los Angeles and met the top officials of Netflix to pitch the film. They asked him to begin writing and presenting the prototype or the first episode of what could be a series. Netflix was so impressed that it asked him to present the second episode.
