The shocking story behind the murder of YouTuber Gabby Petito

The tragic road trip

Gabby and Brian began their "van life" journey in July 2021, aiming to explore national parks and share their experiences online. On August 12, a 911 call reported a domestic dispute between the couple in Moab, Utah. Police bodycam footage showed a distressed Gabby, but no charges were filed, and the couple continued their trip.

Gabby was last seen on August 27, 2021, in Wyoming. Brian returned alone to Florida on September 1, raising suspicions. Gabby's family reported her missing on September 11. Her remains were found on September 19 in Wyoming's Bridger-Teton National Forest. The autopsy revealed she died from "blunt-force injuries to the head and neck, with manual strangulation."

After the revelation of her death, her fiancé, Brian, disappeared on September 13. His remains were discovered on October 20 in Florida's Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park. A notebook found nearby contained his confession: "I ended her life. I thought it was merciful, that it was what she wanted, but I see now all the mistakes I made."

“I am ending my life not because of a fear of punishment but rather because I can’t stand to live another day without her,” he added about his decision to take his own life.

Family's pursuit of justice

Gabby's parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Brian's estate, resulting in a $3 million settlement. They also sued the Moab Police Department, alleging negligence in handling the August 12 incident. The lawsuit was dismissed in November 2024 due to governmental immunity.
