The Role of Sponsorship Versus Mentorship in Career Advancement
Mentoring and sponsoring are often mentioned hand-in-hand during discussions regarding career development, but these two concepts actually function very differently within organizations. The mentor relationship is out there in the open; it is public and dialogic, focusing on the exchange of wisdom, perspective, and advice. It offers a platform for reflection and growth that evolves over time via communication. Sponsoring, however, takes place behind closed doors. Sometimes it may not even have a name, and often it is not even a dialogue at all.

How is Guidance Compared to Advocacy?

In most cases, mentors help people play their part in whatever capacity they are working in. In research done by Harvard Business Review (2019), mentors are seen to contribute positively to development through enhancing knowledge and increasing confidence. Sponsorship, on the other hand, takes on an entirely different dynamic in relation to organizational structure. It entails advocating for a person’s case in terms of speaking up for him/her, or putting him/her forward when decisions are being made.

Visibility Creates Opportunity

Sponsorship frequently functions on the basis of visibility and trust through networks. As indicated by studies in the Academy of Management Journal (2020), opportunities at work need not be necessarily allocated through formal processes. There is naming, talking about jobs, and even pre-selection of individuals who might do the job well, before any process takes place. This is never officially recorded; however, these informal processes shape organizational mobility. The sponsorship factor is made visible because of access, and not to mention.

Different Paths Within the Same System

Mentoring plays a role in the process of development as it helps people interpret their job roles and deal with complexities. Sponsorship, on the other hand, has a closer relationship with advancement, affecting how people are placed within organizational hierarchies. Although both are part of the same system, the ways they operate are quite distinct. This realization provides insight into career progress in ways that go beyond ability and hard work.
