The Reckoning: BBC unveils first look of Steve Coogan as Jimmy Savile

The first look of Steve Coogan as Jimmy Savile has been unveiled. It will be a four-part drama which is titled as "The Reckoning".

The BBC has unveiled the initial official photograph of Steve Coogan portraying the character of Jimmy Savile. Coogan is set to depict the disgraced television personality in a forthcoming four-part BBC drama titled "The Reckoning," which will depict Savile's history of engaging in pedophilic activities.

The image, released by the broadcaster on August 17, portrays Coogan dressed as Savile, adorned in one of the signature red suits that the latter was known for. With Savile's iconic cropped hairstyle, Coogan is seated in a chair, holding a cigar, fully immersed in character.

Principal photography for "The Reckoning" commenced in November 2021 in Manchester.

Coogan, aged 55, expressed that his decision to undertake the role of portraying the former Top of the Pops host, who was also involved in pedophilic activities, was not one made without careful consideration.

In the wake of Savile's passing in 2011, numerous survivors came forward to share harrowing stories of abuse inflicted by him. He allegedly exploited his positions at the BBC and in various institutions like hospitals, prisons, and charities to mask his wrongdoing.

BBC programs such as "Jim'll Fix It" and "Top of the Pops" facilitated Savile's close interaction with children over the course of many years. Subsequently, it emerged that high-ranking figures within the corporation were aware of allegations against him but chose not to take action.
