The Marvels faces lowest MCU opening with $47 million box office debut

The unexpected performance of "The Marvels" raises concerns about the superhero genre's sustainability and its ability to resonate with audiences. The contrasting factors contributing to the film's underwhelming opening, from streaming services to...

The Marvels: Captain Marvel Sequel
The superhero film "The Marvels" has garnered just $47 million (£38 million) during its opening weekend in the US, marking the lowest debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This pales in comparison to the staggering success of "Avengers: Endgame," which achieved a record-breaking $1.2 billion (£980 million) in global ticket sales in 2019.

According to analyst David A Gross, "The Marvels" experienced a significant setback, registering a 67% decline compared to its first film, "Captain Marvel," released in 2019. Gross deems this opening as an "unprecedented Marvel box office collapse," emphasizing the usual trend where second superhero installments outperform their originals. With a production cost of $220 million (£179 million), the film faces an uphill battle to recoup its expenses.

Possible factors for downturn
While the exact cause of this downturn remains unclear, various factors are speculated to contribute. The rise of streaming services might be impacting cinema revenue, and the recently concluded actors' strike prevented "The Marvels" stars from engaging in promotional activities. Gross also points to the prevalence of "unimaginative and bad movies" across the superhero genre.

Superhero fatigue and changing tides in pop culture
Observers have been noting signs of potential superhero fatigue in the industry. Dani Di Placido from Forbes suggested in March that superhero films may no longer feel essential, attributing Marvel Studios' challenges to releasing an abundance of content too quickly, leading to a fatigued and confused audience. Polls have indicated a shifting sentiment against superheroes as the dominant force in pop culture.

Critiques Response
"The Marvels," featuring Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris, received mixed reviews from critics. While some critiques labeled it as an uninspiring addition to the franchise, others noted a surprisingly favorable audience response on Rotten Tomatoes, surpassing expectations despite negative early reviews.

"Skittery sequel loaded down with MCU baggage," Variety quoted.
