The Laundry Mistake That Leaves Clothes Dirty
The logical way to save time and effort might have been to put as many clothes as possible into the washing machine; however, doing so usually has quite an adverse effect. The excessive number of items placed inside the machine restricts its rotating motion and does not allow for proper agitation of the clothes. Proper agitation of the clothes is necessary to ensure adequate interaction with water and detergent. Overloading makes the wash less efficient, which has been proven in several scientific studies and sources, including Consumer Reports and The Washington Post. This will cause the stains not to be removed from the clothes.

Why does the space inside the drum matter?

In addition to the functions carried by water and detergents, those of washing machines rely on motion. According to the specialists, the optimal thing would be to leave some space roughly corresponding to the size of one's hand above the load while running it through the wash cycle (The Guardian; Ask.Todd.com). This means that there will be enough space in the machine for the garments to tumble inside, and consequently, the detergent will rinse out properly. The loading of too many clothes into the machine affects its proper functioning since it works harder but gives no better result. Energy and appliance researchers found that overloaded washing machines consume more electricity and water owing to extra rinse cycles.

Overfilling can have negative consequences

Apart from making the process less efficient, overload is harmful to the clothes and even the washing machine. Clothes thrown into the washing machine will be subjected to greater friction, resulting in wear and tear (Family Handyman). At the same time, the engine of the machine will be required to put in much more effort, which will lead to malfunctions (ApplianceRepair.net). Ultimately, one would end up incurring higher costs for either repairs or having to replace the washing machine sooner.
