HBO's controversial series "The Idol" has been cancelled. The decision was taken after one season. HBO spokesperson has said that "The Idol" was one of the most "provocative original programmes". However, creators and producers have unanimously decided not to come up with "The Idol" season 2, as per a report in Variety.

The creators originally had planned six episodes for "The Idol" season 1. However, the series eventually had five episodes. "The Idol" season 1 concluded on July 2. There was lack of clarity over the making and subsequent release of "The Idol" season 2.

"The Idol" season 1 was created by created by Sam Levinson, Abel 'The Weeknd' Tesfaye and Reza Fahim. The series starred The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp. Also starring Troye Sivan, Dan Levy, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Eli Roth and Hari Nef, "The Idol" premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May.


The show, about a female pop singer who starts a romance with an enigmatic LA club owner, was hit by controversies right from the start. The series underwent extensive reshoots following the departure of director Amy Seimetz in April 2022.
