The film series prequel is set to be released on Nov. 20, 2026. Set 24 years before the first film, “Sunrise on the Reaping,” is based on the 2025 book of the same name. According to Variety, It follows a young Haymitch Abernathy played by Joseph Zada who is selected to compete in the 50th Hunger Games.
Each district of Panem is required to send twice the tributes to the capital because the Games are the second Quarter Quell, which takes place every 25 years. As many as 48 children will fight to the death to win the Hunger Games.
“Sunrise on the Reaping” is directed by Francis Lawrence. The screenplay of the film is written by Billy Ray. Brad Simpson and Nina Jacobson are making a comeback as producers for the film. Cameron MacConomy is the executive producer.

The cast of the film includes Ralph Fiennes as the ruthless Panem dictator, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, Elle Fanning, Billy Porter, Whitney Peak, Mckenna Grace, Jesse Plemons, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Maya Hawke, Lili Taylor and Ben Wang, adapting Suzanne Collins‘ best-selling novel.
