"The Housemaid" With Sydney Sweeney: Cast, Trailer, Release Date

Lionsgate on Tuesday revealed the trailer for The Housemaid, its highly awaited thriller directed by Paul Feig and with Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried.

Set to premiere in theaters on December 19, the movie is taken from Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel and has Millie (Sweeney), a young woman making the effort to leave her past behind by taking a live-in housemaid role with wealthy couple Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew Winchester (Brandon Sklenar). What primarily seems like a perfect opportunity rapidly twists into danger as hidden scandals and family secrets emerge. Michele Morrone and Elizabeth Perkins also appear in major roles.

The adaptation was crafted by Rebecca Sonnenshine, popular for The Boys and The Vampire Diaries, and produced by Todd Lieberman, Laura Fischer, and Paul Feig. The film spots out the psychological turns of McFadden’s 2022 bestseller, providing viewers a suspenseful thrilling experience.


The trailer launches Millie, the Winchester family, and the house’s groundskeeper, creating a tense, mysterious scenario. Millie “soon learns that the family’s secrets are far more dangerous than her own,” as per the synopsis. Talking to PEOPLE at SXSW, Feig cited to the team “did a really good job” showing the thriller for the screen, by adding, “Because it's nerve-wracking — like, it's easy to make something out of a book that's not good; when a book's really good, it's like, oh boy."

Feig also remarked on Sweeney's performance: she “was very attentive to it, and I think we hit just the perfect balance.” Erin Westerman, president of production for Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, explained Sweeney and Seyfried as “perfect” for their opposing positions,citing, “They’re both mysterious, nuanced and incredibly skilled at becoming characters who don’t reveal everything right away.”

What the Trailer Reveals

The teaser hints at turmoil in the Winchester household following Millie’s arrival, having a screaming Seyfried, a potential arrest, and a rendition of Sabrina Carpenter's “Please Please Please.” The film follows Millie as she goes through the sprawling Long Island home of the Winchesters, where she is confined to a remote attic room despite the family’s wealth.

As she settles in, Millie starts to find troubling signs, but her dedication to keep the job places her in elevating jeopardy. The Housemaid promises suspense, psychological tension, and unforeseen twists for readers of the novel and thriller enthusiasts alike.
