Set to premiere in theaters on December 19, the movie is taken from Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel and has Millie (Sweeney), a young woman making the effort to leave her past behind by taking a live-in housemaid role with wealthy couple Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew Winchester (Brandon Sklenar). The adaptation was crafted by Rebecca Sonnenshine, popular for The Boys and The Vampire Diaries, and produced by Todd Lieberman, Laura Fischer, and Paul Feig. The film spots out the psychological turns of McFadden’s 2022 bestseller, providing viewers a suspenseful thrilling experience.The trailer launches Millie, the Winchester family, and the house’s groundskeeper, creating a tense, mysterious scenario. Millie “soon learns that the family’s secrets are far more dangerous than her own,” as per the synopsis. Talking to PEOPLE at SXSW, Feig cited to the team “did a really good job” showing the thriller for the screen, by adding, “Because it's nerve-wracking — like, it's easy to make something out of a book that's not good; when a book's really good, it's like, oh boy."
Feig also remarked on Sweeney's performance: she “was very attentive to it, and I think we hit just the perfect balance.” Erin Westerman, president of production for Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, explained Sweeney and Seyfried as “perfect” for their opposing positions,citing, “They’re both mysterious, nuanced and incredibly skilled at becoming characters who don’t reveal everything right away.”
